At Xcacel you’ll find two beautiful and largely undiscovered “gems” that not many people know about unless a Riviera Maya local tells them the secret! First, enjoy the remote shores of the beautiful, sheltered sandy Xcacel beach with very unspoiled dunes, surrounded by abundant vegetation and palm trees. It is an extremely quiet, perfect for seeking solitude away from crowds. The beach is wide and the sea is the most unbelievably turquoise water that is generally calm and warm. The snorkeling here is excellent.

By night, Xcacel serves a different and far more important purpose, as the first line of defense in the battle to save the giant white and loggerhead sea turtles. Biologists, paid workers and volunteers come from April to early October to help preserve the sea turtles’ eggs from predators and humans. Long before the Yucatan was discovered, these remarkable gentle creatures came to these shores to lay their eggs and give life to future generations. Today, however, they face extinction. For this reason, this turtle nesting ground is a national preserve. Witness this amazing event after 9pm, as female turtles use the darkness for protection when laying their eggs.

The second gem at Xcacel is the Hidden Cenote. Beyond the beach and the dunes, there’s a narrow sandy path surrounded by impenetrable jungle. Follow the path to the very end to find this incredibly beautiful hidden cenote (Xcacelito), which shines like a mirror of water reflected in all the trees and mangroves surrounding it. The cenote water’s fresh, so you can swim or snorkel. There are lots of small tropical fish living there and you can see the stones and fossilized coral hidden below.

How to get there:
From Playa del Carmen, Xcacel is 46km (30 miles) south, past the hotel Bahia Principe and about 4km (2.5 miles) south of Akumal. There’s a sign on Carretera Federal 307 marking its entrance but take note, the sign is on the north side of the highway and difficult to spot when traveling south. You’ll need to make a sharp U-turn to get across the highway. It’s best to go by car or taxi, but if there’s no car to take you, you can take a collectivo (local bus). The drivers will know where to stop. Upon arrival, cross the highway, then walk the stretch of dirt road to the beach. Once at the beach, there will be a guard shack on your right. The beach is open to the public, however, since it is a national preserve under the National System of Protected Areas (SINAP), you are often asked give a small donation to enter (generally no more than 10 pesos per person).

Cozumel Carnival (pronounced Carnaval in Spanish) is one of the islands main events. It happens at the peak of high season when the weather is at its finest. Festivities attract thousands of people from all corners of the world. It starts the week before Fat Tuesday, or Mardi-Gras. Carnival 2013 is a great excuse to really ring in the new year!

Cozumel Carnival 2013 promises to be as spectacular as ever! With our new streets, pedestrian walkways, downtown landscaping, and improvements all over the island; visitors were greeted in “tropicool” style!

This completely free comedy festival will feature over a dozen professional comedians from the United States performing seven shows in four distinct venues in Akumal over three days. The Festival is the brain child of Grammy Award winning president and founder of Stand Up! Records Dan Schlissel and comedian/actor Gus Lynch (Saving Silverman, North Country, I Spy), who seek to showcase the finest professional and fastest rising stars in stand up comedy, as well as the people, restaurants, and businesses of Akumal.

11:00 pm Burning of Juan Carnival (Quema de Juan Carnival) – ok that is the literal translation – I don’t know exactly what that means….I’m hoping for fireworks!!!
At the Municipal park and surrounding streets are stalls of food, games, and rides for the kids.

CARNIVAL in COZUMEL is happening February 15th – 22nd, 2012. There are usually some events happening here in Playa del Carmen, but they are smaller and not as widely advertised. For the full experience, you should head to Cozumel. You can catch a ferry from the Playa del Carmen terminal at the foot of Avenue Benito Juarez and the beach. It will be worth the trip!

Sunday, February 5: The show will take place from 10am – 5pm. The show will include parachutists, airplane stunts, ultralight planes, radio controlled planes, motorcycle stunts, exotic & sports car show, and navy exhibition.

Pilots will include Patty Wagstaff, Skip Stewart, Fred Cabanas, Carlos Dardando and Gary Ward.

The Aerodome is located at Km 11.2 on the Carretera Costera Sur (the south coastal road). Taxis from the ferry dock to the aerodrome will cost 20 pesos, and discounted ferry tickets are available. “Art for the Heart” featured at In Fashion Hotel Jan 13 – Mar 13

A new art exposition, “Art from the Heart” by Fausta Cattaneo, will open on January 13th at In Fashion Hotel in Playa del Carmen.

“Dedicated to the magic of love, the heart’s intelligence …
subtle and powerful that feeling that transforms lived in a miraculous experience.Come … at risk of falling in love!”

The inauguration of the exhibit will be Friday January 13 at 7:30 pm in the In Fashion Hotel Gallery. Works will be on display until March 13, 2012.

Fausta Cattaneo, is an artist and acupuncturist who was born in CasaleMonferrato, Italy in 1975.
Fausta has completed in depth studies of of Chinese culture, yoga, philosophy and art of life and utilizes art as a means of healing, communication and expression.
