On April 17, 18 and 21, Explayarte is proud to present Les Misérables in the Foro Abierto at Xcaret! This full scale musical production, directed by Shane Southcott, will feature a live orchestra and a cast of over 80 of Playa del Carmen’s most talented performers.
Les Misérables is an award-winning, critically acclaimed musical, based on the French historical novel of the same name by French poet and playwright Victor Hugo. It was first published in 1862 and is considered one of the greatest novels of the nineteenth century. Set against the backdrop of 19th-century France, Les Misérables tells an enthralling story of broken dreams and unrequited love, passion, sacrifice and redemption – a timeless testament to the survival of the human spirit. The story follows the plight of ex-convict Jean Valjean and his quest for redemption after serving nineteen years in jail for having stolen a loaf of bread. Valjean’s character is loosely based on the life of Eugène François Vidocq, an ex-convict who became a successful businessman widely noted for his social engagement and philanthropy.

Taste of Playa is a culinary event in Playa del Carmen that celebrates the creativity and cultural influences of chefs throughout the Riviera Maya. The event promotes the unique culinary perspectives of local chefs, highlights new event venues that attract a variety of participants and coordinates the efforts of local businesses and municipal governments. Taste of Playa has captured the attention of international media by showing the spirit of multi-cultural cooperation that defines the modern Riviera Maya.
The event is scheduled for November 18, 2012 in the Parque Fundadores from 3 pm to 9 pm. Local businesses and sponsors will support the operations of this food focused event, leaving chefs free to concentrate on the execution of their creations. Government and media support will promote this festival to local residents and tourists alike, inviting everyone to sample creations that normally they may not have the means or opportunity to enjoy.

The Broadway act, Cirque Dreams Jungle Fantasy, is coming to Cancun! The show, featuring an international cast of aerial acrobats, contortionists, jugglers, magicians and musicians, will run from June 25th through August 5th. It is very much like the Cirque du Soleil shows, but has a different production company. You can see the show at the Moon Palace Resort south of Cancun. Tickets are now available on Ticketmaster starting at $280 pesos and reaching $1,100 pesos for the best seats.

Cancun will celebrate their 2nd annual Gay Pride Parade on Saturday, June 16th. Anyone who wants to show their support for the LGBT community is welcome to join. The idea behind the parade is that no person should be ashamed of who they are, regardless of gender, gender identity or sexual orientation. The parade begins at 5pm at the bullfighting ring and ends at Palapas Park.
